Putting More Torque Into Your Turns with Falk Feddersen PhD

Great surfers do great turns - whether a timeless cutback or a massive fin-huck. Think the explosiveness of Dane Reynolds, the smoothness of Tom Curren, or the rail-power of Michael Peterson. A key to a good turn is differentially rotating the pelvis and the shoulders. This requires functional mobility in the neck, shoulders, spine and the entire rib cage. In this workshop, we will use movement explorations based upon the Feldenkrais Method(R) to improve the suppleness of your upper body and learn to instinctively coordinate arm, shoulder and pelvis movements to improve your turns.

The Feldenkrais Method(R) is a movement awareness practice. The workshop will be taught by Falk Feddersen, who has surfed for 30 years and is a research professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He used the Feldenkrais Method to relearn how to surf after debilitating injury. He is a Feldenkrais Practioner and has studied the method for 11 years.

As we get older, paddling a surfboard often becomes harder. We catch fewer waves and can't drop into critical sections. Shoulders get stiff and the neck and back become very tired. This didn't happen 5, 10, 20 years ago. Sound familiar? Although often attributed to an irreversible aging process, you can learn how to paddle more efficiently and with far greater ease. How? It is all in the nervous system. If you change your brain, that is your movement habits, you can change how you move - whether paddling (surfing or running - the list goes on).

The workshop was taught by Falk Feddersen PhD who has surfed for 30 years and is a research professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography studying surfzone dynamics. He used the Feldenkrais Method to relearn how to paddle and surf after a debilitating injury. He is a Feldenkrais Practitioner and has studied the method for 10 years.

In this workshop, we will be using the principles of the Feldenkrais Method to learn more efficient paddling habits and techniques. We will be exploring a number of Awareness Through Movement (ATM) Lessons that will directly enhance your paddling experience. Participants will also learning about the biomechanics of paddling a surfboard, how it is different from swimming, and what they can do to paddle with greater ease.

ABOUT Awareness Through Movement (ATM): In ATM classes, students are guided through a sequence of gentle movements. By moving slowly and paying attention, the nervous system discovers new possibilities and lets go of less functional habits or patterns. This results in more efficient movement, a feeling of lightness, reduction in aches and pains, and an increased sense of self-awareness. In this workshop, we will focus on lessons that free up the movements required for paddling a surfboard.

Recordings from the Paddling Workshop

These are the first 3 lessons from the Oct 16th 2010 Paddling Workshop taught by Falk Feddersen. If you are interested in improving paddling a surfboard, do these lessons for the first time in order.

Title Source Time
Lesson 1: Introduction to Flexion
Paddling requires a supple spine and rib cage. This lesson teaches an aspect of this.

Lesson 2: Rolling the Fists
Paddling also requires mobility in the shoulder joint. This lesson helps one discover this but the secret is that it is not all in the shoulder joint.

Lesson 3: Tying the Arms
Paddling requires mobility of the shoulder blade...
